I recommend all amateur boxers get familiar with functional training (most of which is basic calisthenics with an edge). This type of movement training really allows boxers to access more of their strength without developing additional muscle mass and gaining weight.

2) The long distance runs are NOT the best way to condition a boxer for the demands of their sport. Long distance running does not offer conditioning for the intermittent power needed in boxing. Long distance running also does provide the upper body cardio endurance need in boxing. AGAIN - functional training circuits can provide aggressive cardio specific training to the cardio and biomechanical demand of boxing.

3) Although much of "knock-out power" is a genetic gift, functional training can go a long way to improve punching power. Functional training teaches the body how to produce force and create power by coordinating the major muscles system within the kinetic chain that drives power.

For more information on the functional training techniques that have created many champions go to www.ihpcombat.com and look up the "SAID Training for Boxing" DVD, by JC Santana.

JC Santana, CEO Institute of Human Performance www.ihpfit.com
